Cellar Favorite: 1970 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo

Italy: Piedmont, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Nov 2021

A door to another time in Piedmont opens with the 1970 Barolo, a wine made by Battista Rinaldi long before his son, Beppe, ran the winery and well before his granddaughters, Marta and Carlotta, were even born.

Champagne: 2021 New Releases

France: Champagne, featured

Antonio Galloni, Nov 2021

After a brutal year in 2020 in which sales slumped dramatically, Champagne has come back with a vengeance. Demand and enthusiasm are high, no doubt buoyed by a return to more or less ‘normal’ conditions, whatever that means these days. Readers will find an extraordinary range of Champagnes in the market that span the entire stylistic spectrum ranging from the glitziest grande marque new releases to small-production artisan bottlings.

Cellar Favorite: 1989 Gaja Barbaresco

Italy: Tuscany, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Nov 2021

It is still one of the greatest tastings I have ever done. One chilly, late fall afternoon about a dozen years ago, Angelo and Gaia Gaja opened all of their 1989s and 1990s for an article I was working on, Piedmont’s Glorious 1989 and 1990 Vintages Revisited.

Breaking News: Justin Willett Acquires Iconic Fiddlestix Vineyard

United States: California, General Interest, featured

Antonio Galloni, Nov 2021

Justin Willett’s acquisition of the iconic Fiddlestix Vineyard is sure to make waves for many reasons. For over a decade Willett's superb wines at Tyler have placed him in the upper echelon of Santa Barbara producers. With this investment Willett sends a strong message that the future of Tyler is very much as an estate winery in the Sta. Rita Hills and makes him one of the biggest advocates of the appellation. At Fiddlestix, Willett leads a team with partners Erik Mallea and Todd Gray of Willett-Mallea Farming and entrepreneur/wine lover William Borgers.

Vinous Table

Antonio Galloni, Oct 2021

This recent Saturday lunch at TORC was a nice break from my tastings in Napa Valley. It was great to see an old friend and get back to a more normal rhythm of actually being able spend time with people again.

Santa Barbara: On the Road…Finally!

United States: California, featured

Antonio Galloni, Oct 2021

Santa Barbara continues its streak of superb vintages with the 2019s. Chardonnay and red Rhône varieties are particularly strong, while the Pinots are just a bit less consistent. There’s plenty more to explore in this report, including Bordeaux blends and the first of the 2020s. As I have written before, the vinous landscape in Santa Barbara has so much to offer.

2017 Barolo, Part 2: The Late Releases

Italy: Piedmont, featured

Antonio Galloni, Oct 2021

As always, our fall Barolo article focuses on wines that were bottled this past summer and other late releases. Two thousand and seventeen is a tricky vintage with a degree of variability that requires selection. Many wines are gorgeous, but others are disappointing.

Cellar Favorite: 1977 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Glen Ellen Vineyards

United States: California, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Oct 2021

Needless to say, readers who own or can find the 1977 will enjoy more than a wine, as the 1977 represents a piece of history.

Cellar Favorite: 1969 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio

Italy: Tuscany, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Oct 2021

Monsanto’s 1969 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio was a very pleasant surprise after a long day of visits and tastings. Monsanto is one of the historic estates of Chianti Classico.
