Cellar Favorite: Four From Domaine Raveneau

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Burgundy

Antonio Galloni, Aug 2019

I was inspired to write this article by my colleague Steve Tanzer’s superb retrospective on Raveneau’s Chablis Montée de Tonnerre and my own recent visit trip to Chablis earlier this summer. I have adored the Raveneau wines for a very long time. I buy them whenever I can for my own cellar.

Cellar Favorite: 1904 & 1948 Langoa-Barton

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Bordeaux

Neal Martin, Aug 2019

It is a shame that Langoa-Barton is destined to lie in the shadow of its sibling, Léoville-Barton, because it produces a great Saint-Julien wine in its own right. Moreover, that wine has a propensity to age in bottle with just as much élan.

St joseph grippat 1991

Cellar Favorite: 1991 Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat St-Joseph

France: Rhône & Beaujolais, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Neal Martin, Aug 2019

Every now and then you taste a bottle that resonates even more the following day. That is certainly the case with this bottle, generously opened at Noble Rot restaurant for me and sommelier, winemaker and now writer, Rajat Parr.

Meursault perrieres 1979 coche dury bottle

Cellar Favorite: 1979 Domaine Jean-François Coche-Dury Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Burgundy

Neal Martin, Jul 2019

Here is a bottle rarely seen, if not quite as “unicorn” as the 2010 Bourgogne Blanc from Armand Rousseau that I reported on earlier this year. It was actually served as a freshener before a Christophe Roumier dinner – only in Hong Kong!

Cellar Favorite: 1997 Domaine Servin Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Burgundy

Antonio Galloni, Jul 2019

The 1997 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise at the end of my tasting of 2018s and 2017s at Domaine Servin. I can’t say I have a ton of experience with 1997, which is not exactly remembered as a great year for Chablis.

Cellar Favorite: 1959 Domaine Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Burgundy

Neal Martin, Jul 2019

During last November’s visit, following a tasting of his 2017s, Duroché said that he had something else he wished me taste, and did I have time? Well, the answer to that question is always affirmative.

Felton road cornish point

Cellar Favorite: 2009 Felton Road Pinot Noir Cornish Point

New Zealand, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Neal Martin, Jul 2019

I want Pinot Noirs that evolve into something intellectual and complex, with both character and deliciousness – just like this Felton Road.

Cellar Favorite: 1979 Domaine Georges Roumier Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, France: Burgundy

Neal Martin, Jul 2019

You could make a strong argument that this Burgundy is the most significant of all my contributions to Vinous’ Cellar Favorites column. Maybe without it, things would have been different.

Cellar Favorite: 2012 Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero

Piedmont, Italy: Piedmont, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites

Antonio Galloni, Jun 2019

Vietti’s 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is absolutely gorgeous. In 2012, the Villero is especially lifted and aromatic, showing a distinctly floral and red-toned expression of fruit rather than the darker, more balsamic inflections that are typical of this Castiglione Falletto cru.

Abreu – The 2009s Revisited

United States: California, cellar favorite, Cellar Favorites, featured

Antonio Galloni, Jun 2019

I still remember the first time I tasted the Abreu 2009s. It was fall of 2011, the year Robert Parker asked me to take over Napa Valley coverage at The Wine Advocate. Those 2009s were so showy and unbelievably alluring when they were young. Needless to say, I was deeply intrigued to revisit them at nearly ten years of age.
