Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Vertical

Two thousand twenty-six marks the 50th Anniversary of the Judgement of Paris. On that fateful day, a group of experts tasted a collection of American and French wines blind. The panelists ranked one red ahead of all the others: the 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. That wine, and the others served in that tasting, helped pave the way for the American wine industry as we know it today. I had the opportunity to spend time with late Founder Warren Winiarski on multiple occasions. He remained deeply passionate and intellectually curious all the way through to his later years, displaying a rare sense of humility for someone who had achieved so much. Winiarski’s legacy lives on in the wines he made, the people he influenced and the expertise he left for the current generation at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. 

The Judgement of Paris is widely considered a seminal moment, as it proved American wines could stand shoulder to shoulder with French wines. But it was more than that. In a recent conversation, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Aubert de Villaine, one of the participants in the Judgement of Paris, confided that the tasting was a wake-up call for French producers. Jean-Philippe Delmas at Haut-Brion echoed that sentiment. In short, the Judgment of Paris had a profound impact on a very large portion of the fine wine industry as it existed at the time. 

These are some of the many themes we will explore at an epic Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars tasting we will be hosting on March 5, 2026, in London. The tasting and dinner will be held at Cornus, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. We will be joined by Marchese Piero Antinori, whose family bought the winery in 2023, along with Antinori CEO Renzo Cotarella and Estate Director Juan Muñoz-Oca. And yes, we will be tasting the 1973, along with a staggering collection of vintages spanning six decades. Tickets will be available to Vinous subscribers shortly.
